It is of great use to have a set of rules that you can go by. It is also useful to give someone in each group (known as the Team Leader) prior knowledge of where they are to go and what they are to do. In addition it is advised to give each of these people an written outline of these details. If in cars, think about whether you will give drivers one of these sheets.

Rules & Guidelines
It is useful to have a set of rules, tips and hints that you can give to each group or read out beforehand. It may contain information such as the following;

Your are racing as a team. Allow everyone on the team to know what a clue says. Allow everyone an opportunity to compete in tasks.

Listen to your team leader at all times, and show respect. At some points they may ask you to drop what you are doing and leave. It is in your best interests to do this. The team leader holds the key to your success.

Read instructions very carefully, or you may miss important information. In some situations it may help to write things down.

Do not do anything to draw attention to yourselves, particularly in public places. This includes keeping envelopes and instruction sheets so they are not very obvious.

In all public places no team member is to run.

Please do not slam doors, or open them too quickly. This is just another way of drawing attention to yourselves and endangering your safety.

In some cases teams will arrive at tasks at the same time. The team that arrives at the activity first has the chance to complete the task before the next team that arrives. If doubt arises as to who arrived first, the team leaders will have the final decision.

The street directory and other such sources will be very helpful in finding your way.

Don’t be scared to ask anyone for help, they may have known you were coming!

Team Instructions
For the Team Leader, you need a sheet outlining the jobs they must perform during the night and an itinerary. This may contain information like;

This is a sheet for each team leader to help them through the Amazing Race.
As a team leader you have two jobs;

  • To tell your group important info at each stop
  • To remind the driver when to do their tasks

If the group loses a clue, you have a list telling them where to go next. If this happens, you can just follow another group.

Stop Number 1 is .. [a location]
at Stop Number 1 you must tell the group.. [the details]
Stop Number 2 is ..
at Stop Number 2 be careful that..
Stop Number 3 is ..
if you can’t find Stop Number 3 it’s near..
Stop Number 4 is ..

Driver Instructions
It’s good that the driver knows where they’re going, even if their team is telling them where to go. You need to make sure there are instructions for lost teams to get back on track.
Driver will also need an itinerary so they know they’re at the right place.

This is a sheet for each driver to help them through the Amazing Race.
Drivers are asked to keep this sheet to themselves, so that you don’t spoil some of the surprises for the rest of your team. Regardless of this, some things will surprise you as well.

Drivers are required to obey road rules at all times. You must stop at all yellow traffic lights, stop signs, and must never go above the speed limit. Some of your group members may ask you to disobey these rules, but it is safer (and funnier to watch) if you obey the rules at all times.

We ask these things so that tonight is as authentic an Amazing Race experience as possible.
